Carlos Alcaraz has apologized for his statement. Behavior during defeat to Gael Monfils on Friday afternoon at the Cincinnati Open.
During the third set, Alcaraz destroyed his racket by repeatedly slamming it against the court, a rare display of frustration for the four-time Grand Slam winner. The ATP No. 3 lost 4-6, 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 to 37-year-old Monfils.
Posting in Spanish on X on Saturday, Alcaraz said his attitude was not right, and his actions on the court should not have happened. The 21-year-old said it is difficult to control yourself when your heart rate is high, and he will work to make sure it does not happen again.
Alcaraz was playing his first match after winning the silver medal at the Paris Olympics, where he lost to Novak Djokovic, who had also beaten him in last year’s Cincinnati final.
“I felt it was the worst match of my career,” Alcaraz said on Friday. “I was practising really well. I was feeling great. But I couldn’t play. I want to forget it and try to go to New York.”
The US Open begins on August 26 in New York.
