TRAI’s new regulations as it introduces call and SMS-only tariff plans to benefit 2G users. New rules extend validity of Special Tariff Vouchers (STVs) to 365 days for cost-effective options.
TRAI’s New Regulations Target 2G Users
The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has announced the Telecom Consumers Protection (Twelfth Amendment) Regulations 2024, mandating telecom operators to introduce call and SMS-only tariff plans. This move benefits around 150 million 2G users who rely on voice calls and SMS without requiring data.
Extended Validity for Special Tariff Vouchers (STVs)
TRAI has extended the validity of STVs from 90 days to 365 days, offering long-term cost-saving options. These vouchers allow users to customize their plans for calls, SMS, or data without recurring charges, making them ideal for budget-conscious consumers.
Impact on Telecom Operators and ARPU Strategies
While operators like Airtel and Vodafone Idea may face challenges due to reduced bundled plan sales, Reliance Jio, focusing on 4G and 5G services, remains unaffected. TRAI’s move to mandate affordable options, including a ₹10 recharge plan, ensures flexibility for low-income users without reversing the push for digital inclusion.
