Actress Bhavana’s Instagram post.
Amid the turmoil in the Malayalam film industry following the release of the Hema Committee report and several high-profile resignations over sexual misconduct allegations, actress Bhavana on Sunday posted a post on Instagram with a quote by Cuban revolutionary Che Guevara. “Above all, one must be able to feel deeply any injustice against anyone, anywhere in the world” – Che Guevara, the post instantly went viral on the social media platform.
Actress and Women in Cinema Collective (WCC) member Ramya Nambeesan posted that the current movement began with a courageous act by her friend. “This world belongs equally to all who are born here. Everything we see today began with my dear friend who showed through her life that an environment to live with self-respect is not someone’s charity but our right,” she wrote in the post. She ended the post with a quote from Italian Marxist thinker Antonio Gramsci – “Speaking the truth is revolutionary.”
Filmmaker Geethu Mohandas, another WCC member, echoed Ms Nambeesan’s words, posting, “We must not forget. It all started because one woman had the courage to fight.” Actress Manju Warrier reposted the same poster on her wall in solidarity.
The WCC, on whose demand the State government had constituted the Justice K. Hema committee, is widely credited with ushering in the current wave of change in the industry.
