History was created on Sunday (IST) when Afghanistan defeated the mighty Australia by 21 runs in the Super 8 match of the T20 World Cup 2024 at Kingstown. Asked to bat first, the Afghanistan side were restricted to 148/6 despite a 118-run partnership between their openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadran. Chasing 149, Australia lost early wickets but Glenn Maxwell brought them back in the game with a knock of 59 runs. Maxwell, who had denied Afghanistan a historic win during the first ODI World Cup 2023, was leading Australia to another memorable victory. But this time, Afghanistan bounced back and bundled out Australia for 127 runs.

This was Afghanistan's first win over Australia in six international matches. As soon as Afghanistan registered the historic win, social media was flooded with wishes and messages from fans for Rashid Khan and his team.

Apart from the partnership between Gurbaz and Zadran, the contribution of the bowlers helped Afghanistan win. Fast bowler Gulbadin Naib took four wickets to guide the team to victory.

After the victory, Naib said, “We were waiting for this for a long time. It was a great moment for me, my country and my people. It was a great achievement for our cricket. Thanks to our fans for supporting our cricket journey. We worked hard in the last 2 months and the result is in front of you. It was not easy to bat on the wicket, the ball was very bouncy. I took two wickets in the beginning and continued it later as well.”

He said, “Thanks to Rashid for believing in me. It was a complete team effort. The way Naveen bowled, the way Gurbaz and Ibrahim batted. We finally beat Australia! It is a great achievement for Afghanistan cricket, our history is not very big, so it is a great achievement. We played great cricket in the last World Cup and this year we beat New Zealand in the group stage.”

Apart from him, Naveen Ul Haq took three wickets while Mohammad Nabi, Azmatullah Umarzai and Rashid Khan took one wicket each.

With this win, Afghanistan have kept themselves alive in the race for the semi-finals. They will now face Bangladesh in their last Super 8 match on Tuesday.
