New Delhi:
The horrific rape and murder of 31-year-old Moumita Debnath, a trainee doctor in Kolkata, has shaken the entire nation. Alia BhattSara Ali Khan, Vijay Vermaand others have raised their voices against the heinous crime committed at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. Now, joining the chorus of outrage, actress has also joined in celina jaitly has shared her experience of childhood harassment and victim-shaming. In a post on X (formerly known as Twitter), she recounted an incident that happened in her sixth grade. She wrote, “The victim is always at fault: In this picture I was in sixth grade when boys from a nearby university started waiting outside my school. They would follow my school rickshaw everyday and tease me all the way home.”
The actress further added, “I pretended not to notice them and a few days later they started throwing stones at me in the middle of the street to get my attention. No one standing there noticed it. I was told by a teacher: it was my fault because I was ‘too western and didn’t wear loose clothes and oil my hair and tie it in two plaits!'”
Recalling another incident in which a man exposed himself to her, Celina Jaitly said, “It was also at this age when a man exposed his private parts to me for the first time while I was waiting for the school rickshaw in the morning. For many years I blamed myself for the incident and kept repeating the teacher’s words in my mind that it was my fault!”
Celina Jaitly also shared a disturbing experience where a teacher wrongly labelled her as “characterless”. She wrote, “In class 11 I still remember they cut the brake wires of my scooty because I was not recognising the boys from the university who used to harass me and call me nasty names and leave nasty notes on my scooty. My classmates got scared for me and told our teachers. My class teacher called me and told me ‘you seem to be a forward type girl, ride a scooty and wear jeans in extra classes with short open hair, so boys think you are characterless’ It was always my fault. I still remember the day I jumped off my scooty to save myself because my brake wires were cut. I was badly injured and yet it was my fault. My scooty was damaged… I was hurt both physically and mentally… and I was told it was my fault!”
Celina Jaitly concluded her note by revealing that her grandfather had to pick her up and drop her off at school for safety. “My retired Colonel grandfather, who fought two wars for our country in his old age, had to pick me up and drop me off at school… I still remember the rude boys who chased me, even damaged my scooty, made fun of my retired Colonel grandfather and passed derogatory comments at him. Nana stood and stared at them and then he turned away shaking his head and I could read his face as he walked away with me. He had hatred for the very people he had sacrificed his life for. It is time to stand up and demand our right to be protected, we are not to blame!” she wrote.
