Defending champion Argentina beat Canada 2-0 in the opening match of the Copa America in Atlanta on Thursday, with forwards Julian Alvarez and Lautaro Martinez scoring second-half goals to secure the win.

Canada applied timely pressure to create a few chances in the first half, however, Argentina came closest to scoring when Angel Di Maria made a run from his own half and missed a golden opportunity.

Lionel Scaloni's side found the breakthrough just four minutes after the restart when Lionel Messi provided a superb pass to Alexis Mac Allister who deflected it past Canadian goalkeeper Maxime Crepeau to find Alvarez for the big goal.

Canada worked hard after falling behind but the introduction of veteran centre-back Nicolas Otamendi gave Argentina the stability they needed before substitute Martinez sealed the win with a Messi pass in the 88th minute.
