Atletico Madrid failed to score after 25 attempts and had two goals disallowed in the second half of a 0-0 draw at home against promoted Espanyol in the Spanish League on Wednesday (August 28, 2024).
It was the second draw in three games at the start of the season for Diego Simeone’s side, and the first point in their return to the top level for Espanyol.
Rodrigo Riquelme scored twice in the second half, including in extra time, but both goals were disallowed for offside at the Metropolitano Stadium.
“The team played very well, but we lacked efficiency in front of goal,” Simeone said. “We started well in the first half but then we were a bit disappointed. We tried towards the end but our lack of efficiency meant the ball didn’t go in.”
Atletico was looking to regain momentum after beating Girona 3-0 at home on Sunday and began its league campaign with a 2-2 draw with Villarreal.
On Tuesday (August 27, 2024), Barcelona became the only team to register three wins in the first three rounds this season when it won 2-1 at Rayo Vallecano. Defending champions Real Madrid are looking for their second win when they visit Las Palmas on Thursday (August 29, 2024). It started with a 1-1 draw at Mallorca.
Espanyol managed just one attempt on goal on Wednesday (August 29, 2024). It was one of the bottom three clubs in the group stage, returning after spending a season in the second division.
Athletic earned their first win of the season by beating Valencia 1-0 at home, leaving their opponents in last place after three consecutive defeats.
Alavés also won for the first time, beating Real Sociedad 2–1. Sociedad played a man less from the 29th minute when Mikel Oyarzabal was sent off with a straight red card for a foul.
In the match between promoted clubs, Valladolid and Leganés drew 0–0 in Valladolid.
