Bangladesh’s interim government demands the extradition of Sheikh Hasina from India, warning of international intervention if unfulfilled.
Bangladesh Demands Sheikh Hasina’s Return
Tensions rise as Bangladesh’s interim government, led by Muhammad Yunus, demands the extradition of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina from India. Hasina, 77, fled Bangladesh in 2024 after student-led protests toppled her 16-year government.

Extradition Treaty at Stake
Law Adviser Asif Nazrul stated that India’s refusal to extradite Hasina would breach their treaty, with Dhaka threatening to seek international support. The extradition treaty permits denial if the offense is political or if the individual hasn’t been convicted of an extraditable crime.
Minority Rights Concerns
India has raised concerns over increasing attacks on minorities in Bangladesh, especially Hindus. Meanwhile, Hasina accuses the interim government of genocide and failing to protect minorities after her removal from power.
The escalating tensions test diplomatic relations between the two neighbors as Bangladesh pushes for Hasina’s return.
