Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) officials have claimed that board president Nazmul Hasan Papon has offered to step down to cooperate with the Muhammad Yunus-led government in bringing about reforms. Nazmul is currently serving his fourth term as BCB president, and has been in hiding in London since unrest began in the country, which eventually led to the collapse of the Sheikh Hasina government.
According to a report CricbuzzSome of the BCB directors who are in Dhaka met on August 14 to discuss their next course of action. Also, in the past few days, several former BCB officials and organisers have come to the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium to demand the resignation of Nazmul and Co, whose term ends in October 2025.
The report quoted a BCB director who was present at the meeting as saying, “One of our directors is in touch with them and according to him Papon bhai is ready to cooperate with the government and is even ready to resign from the post of president to bring about reforms in the board.”
Another BCB director who was present at the meeting was quoted as saying in the report that if the board is run by an elected body after this, they will need the full support of the interim government. “If the president resigns, they can request to accept his resignation and call a board meeting for (the next) elections. They can do that,” said another senior director who is part of the current board.
Asked what procedure would be followed if BCB president Hassan resigns, the veteran director said, “I can only talk to you about the constitution that has been approved by the general council and beyond that I cannot say anything because I don’t know anything.”
“If any board director or chairman resigns, he has to resign before the board. Because normally if anybody resigns from the bank, it comes before the board, and the board accepts it or rejects it, as per our constitution, it is the same thing and if anybody resigns, he has to resign before the board and the board has to call a meeting and accept or reject that resignation.”
“If we accept the resignation there will be a vacancy and that vacancy has to be filled through election. The chairman and vice chairman will be elected among the 25 (board directors). The board which accepts the resignation can elect the next chairman and vice chairman and that is the process.”
