Bharti Airtel announced a 10-21 per cent hike in mobile tariffs on Friday, June 28, 2024, a day before larger rival Reliance Jio announced a rate hike.

The revision in mobile tariff will be effective from July 3, Airtel said in a release.

Announcing the mobile tariff revision, the Sunil Mittal-led telco said, “We have ensured that there is a very nominal price increase (less than 70 paise per day) on entry-level plans so as not to burden budget-challenged consumers.”

Bharti Airtel said it believes mobile average revenue per user (ARPU) should be above Rs 300 to enable a financially healthy business model for telcos in India.

“We believe this level of ARPU will enable the substantial investments required in network technology and spectrum while providing a modest return on capital,” the telco said.

In unlimited voice plans, Airtel has increased tariffs by around 11% and the rates have been revised accordingly from ₹179 to ₹99; ₹455 to ₹509; and ₹1,799 to ₹1,999. In the daily data plan category, the ₹479 plan has been increased to ₹579 (20.8%).

The mobile tariff hike by mobile operators comes soon after the 10th spectrum auction, which concluded in just two days with a lukewarm response from the industry.
