Bhavanisagar based Agricultural Research Center got award for seed production

The Agricultural Research Station at Bhavanisagar of Tamil Nadu Agricultural University received the Best Seed Production Center award at the 54th Agricultural Research Fair.th This was said recently at a programme organised on the foundation day of TNAU, Coimbatore.

The award reflects the station's unwavering commitment to maintaining the highest standards in quality seed production and has emerged as a leading example for excellence in the field of seed production, a release said. Started in 1955 to meet the agricultural requirements of the farmers of the district, the station was involved in breeding and evaluation of new crop varieties including sorghum, red gram, groundnut, amla and turmeric for the western region.

The research centre has developed several innovative agro-technologies like cropping systems, research on drip irrigation and water and fertilizer management for agricultural and horticultural crops, monitoring of pests and diseases, suggestions for different crops, production of improved seeds, cuttings and saplings as well as breeder, foundation and TNAU-labelled seeds, the release said. Recently, a direct agriculture input sales counter was opened to cater to the needs of farmers.

N. Sakthivel, professor and head of the research centre received the award from K.G. Shaji, chairman of NABARD. The best seed production scientist award was given to K. Amudha, associate professor of plant breeding and genetics. Agricultural supervisor K. Gopi received the award for 25 years of service. TNAU vice-chancellor V. Geethalakshmi and others were present.
