Star batsman Suryakumar Yadav wowed with the bat for India in his first match of the T20 World Cup Super 8 stage against Afghanistan in Barbados. He scored 53 off 28 balls with the help of five fours and three sixes, helping India post a challenging 181-8 on a difficult batting track. Despite the 33-year-old currently being the world's No. 1 T20I batsman, he was mistaken for Mohammed Siraj by a journalist during the pre-match press conference. While the journalist mistakenly referred to Surya as Siraj, the Indian batsman took it in a sportsman-like spirit and gave a funny reply that made the entire press box burst into laughter.

“Siraj is not here… Siraj bhai is having his food,” Surya said with a big smile on his face.

After the match, India captain Rohit Sharma praised the crucial partnership of Suryakumar and Hardik Pandya and the top-class bowling of pacer Jasprit Bumrah.

Rohit said after the match, “For the last two years we have been playing T20 matches here, so we understand the conditions and plan accordingly. We adapted ourselves to the conditions and scored 180 runs, which was a great effort by the batsmen. We had excellent bowlers, who defended brilliantly.”

“Everyone came and did their job, that's important and we focus on that. The partnership between Sky (Suryakumar Yadav) and Hardik was important at that time, we needed someone who can bat deep, which they did. We know Bumrah's class and what he can do. It's important for us to use him wisely regardless of the conditions. He is ready to take responsibility and he has been doing that for years.”

Talking about the combination of three spinners, Rohit said, “We have to assess the conditions and the opposition team and based on that we are ready to make changes if needed. I felt three spinners were good here, if the next time it is favorable for the fast bowlers then we will go with the fast bowlers.”
