New Delhi:
Javed Akhtar attended the NDTV program as a guest. Special Shows India through the lens of its symbolsThe legendary poet-screenwriter reflected on the concepts of luck and circumstances in a conversation with Nikunj Garg and Mariya Shakeel. Is success a mix of hard work and luck? Are legends made by circumstances or hard work? Javed Akhtar believes that hard work and luck are not opposed to each other. However, they play very different and important roles in achieving success. To make his point strong, Javed Akhtar compared life to a game of rummy.
“Sometimes I feel life is like a game of rummy. You may be a good player, but if you don’t get a good card, what will you do? There is something called playing skill. Cards are like circumstances. Circumstances are not your choice, cards are not your choice. Then how you arrange your circumstances or your cards depends on your skill. And how you guess what the possibilities are… here you can make a sequence, here you can take a turn… because others are throwing cards that will come to you… the guesses can be more intelligent, less intelligent. Yes, there is something called playing skill. But cards are important, so circumstances are important too.”
Taking cue from his words, the film legend was asked if he believes in fate. While his frequent collaborator Salim Khan believes in fate, Javed Akhtar insisted, “I don’t believe in fate at all.” Speaking to NDTV, he said, “Circumstances are not fate, they are random. Fate means something is pre-written. No, nothing is pre-written. There are 7 billion people on this planet – everyone is trying something. Every person, who is alive, is trying something. The seven billion patterns create a strange pattern in society. These patterns are called circumstances. They are not planned, they are random. It is like entering a big fair. Every person wants to move in a slightly different direction than the other person. Then you enter the crowd. Sometimes you will get favourable moments, sometimes you will be pushed back. But nobody wants to push you back, nobody wants to give you way. This is happening because of the efforts of seven billion people.”
Does Javed Akhtar believe that hard work, talent and honesty contribute more to success than luck? Javed Akhtar’s wise answer to this question was, “Cards keep changing, players remain the same. Only one thing remains constant in the game – neither the cards, nor the victory. How well you play, how consistently you play… If you lose, don’t be disappointed, if you are winning, don’t be arrogant. If you are a good player, sooner or later you will win.”
Javed Akhtar concluded his philosophical views on fate thus: “I do not believe in fate. But I do not have the illusion that I control everything.”
