Bernardo Silva scored the winning spot kick and Diogo Costa made three saves as Portugal won 3-0 in a penalty shootout against Slovenia to reach the quarter-finals of Euro 2024, where they will face France.

After 90 minutes went goalless, Cristiano Ronaldo had a chance to put Portugal ahead on a penalty in the first half of extra time but Jan Oblak made a brilliant save, leaving the Portuguese captain in tears.

Neither team could score and the match went to penalties, with Josep Iličić saving the first kick for the Slovenian side, then Ronaldo putting his side ahead, and the result sealed when Jure Balkovac's spot kick was saved.

Costa then made a save from Benjamin Verbic, allowing Silva to confidently score the winner to send Portugal into the last eight and face France in Hamburg on Friday.
