Bollywood star Aamir Khan's son Junaid's debut film 'Maharaj' was scheduled to release on Netflix last week. However, the Gujarat High Court extended the interim stay on the film's release after eight members of the Pushti Marg sect filed a petition. The petitioners raised concerns over the film's depiction of an 1862 British-era defamation case, which they argued “defamed Hinduism” and made blasphemous remarks against Lord Krishna and devotional hymns. Despite the controversy, the film's advocates say it is based on “historic legal proceedings” that are a matter of public record.
The 1862 defamation case centered on a confrontation between a Vaishnavite religious leader and a social reformer, Karsandas Mulji, who had alleged in an article in a Gujarati weekly that the religious leader had sexual relations with his female devotees.
