Former Italian star Roberto Baggio and his family robbed at gunpoint

Retired Italy star Roberto Baggio was robbed at gunpoint at his home while watching the national team's game against Spain at the European Championship on Thursday, local police said.

According to Italian media reports, at least five armed robbers broke into Baggio's villa near the northern city of Vicenza at around 10 pm local time. When the former football player confronted them, one of them hit Baggio on the head with the butt of a gun.

The robbers locked Baggio, 57, and his family in a room and looted jewellery, watches and cash.

After the thieves left, Baggio broke down the door and called the police. He was taken to the hospital and his wounds were stitched. His family members were unharmed.

“Anything can happen in such circumstances. Fortunately, the violence only resulted in a few stitches, bruises and a lot of fear,” Baggio said in a statement to the Italian news agency ANSA. “Now we have to overcome fear.”

Baggio made 56 appearances for Italy, scoring 27 goals, and played for the country's three biggest clubs: Juventus, Inter Milan and AC Milan.

Spain won the match 1–0 against Italy in Gelsenkirchen.
