Peter Lundgren, former Swedish tennis player who has also been a coach roger federer The 59-year-old Swiss international who was one of the most successful players early in his career has died, his family said on Friday.
“Unfortunately one of the best players left us too early,” his son Lucas Lundgren wrote on Facebook.
Lundgren was part of the wave of Swedish tennis players in the 1980s that followed icon Björn Borg, and played alongside players such as Mats Wilander and Stefan Edberg.
“Peter Lundgren was a wonderful person, he had a huge heart and a great sense of humour,” Borg told the Swedish daily Aftonbladet.
“Everybody loved him. He will be missed in the tennis world.”
Lundgren won three ATP titles and was ranked No. 25 in the world at the peak of his career.
After retiring from the game, he coached Federer for four years, helping the Swiss superstar win 10 ATP titles and his first Grand Slam crown at Wimbledon in 2003.
