Ghosh was arrested on Monday in a corruption case. He was also detained along with three other suspects – Ghosh’s security guard Afsar Ali Khan, Biplab Singha, owner of RG Kar’s vendor Maa Tara Traders, and Suman Hazra, owner of a medical shop in Howrah, which is accused of selling recycled medicines from hospitals. All of them have been sent to CBI custody till September 10.
CBI counsel Rambabu Kanojia told the court that these four accused are an integral part of a larger network involved in corruption.
“There is a bigger nexus in this, which needs to be investigated,” Kanaujia said.
Around 3.30 pm, when Ghosh and other suspects were being taken from the CBI’s Anti-Corruption Branch office at Nizam Palace on AJC Bose Road, they encountered a suspicious person. The court proceedings began at around 4:05 pm, fifteen minutes after the accused entered the courtroom. Judge Sujit Kumar Jha repeatedly called for restraint, eventually having to call Ghosh and others to his podium to escort them and calm the situation.
The CBI has made several allegations against the four: Illegal gratification by government servant (Section 7, Prevention of Corruption Act), Criminal Misconduct by Public Servant (Section 13, Clause 2 of Prevention of Corruption Act), Cheating (Section 420 IPC), Criminal Breach of Trust (Section 409 IPC), Criminal Conspiracy (Section 120 B), and Forgery of Document (Section 467 IPC), etc.
Kanaujia sought 10 days’ custody, citing the widespread nature and gravity of the crime.
“The scope of the crime is huge,” Kanaujia said. “We need to collect more evidence. Besides, some more crimes may come to light during the investigation.”
Ghosh’s lawyer Zohaib Rauf argued for reduction of the detention period. Ghosh’s collaboration highlighted As per the investigation so far.
“Even on Monday, when he was arrested, he went to the CBI office. He appeared for questioning every day he was summoned. The court is requested to consider the period of custody,” Rauf said.
Despite Ghosh’s plea, the court did not consider a bail plea for him or the other defendants. When the accused were being taken out, the CBI called in additional security forces. Ten more CRPF personnel formed a security cordon, but as they left the court, a protester managed to break in and hit Ghosh on the back of the head before he was quickly pushed into a CBI vehicle.
