Florida Freshman Quarterback DJ Lagway He will make his first career start at home on Saturday Samfordwith starter Graham Mertz He was sidelined under concussion protocol.
Coach Billy Napier said during his news conference Wednesday that Mertz has been unable to practice this week but is feeling better now. Mertz was injured late in the third quarter of a 41-17 loss to Miami last weekend.
Lagway entered the game and led three series, including a touchdown drive in which he showed not only his arm talent but also his ability to play with his feet. He finished with 3-of-6 passing for 31 yards and rushed for 20 yards with an interception.
Lagway, ranked as the No. 8 player in the ESPN 300 and the 2023 Gatorade Player of the Year, has given Gators fans hope that he can help make a difference. He enrolled in January and participated in spring practice.
Napier reiterated that despite the defeat miami“I think as the season goes on, we have an opportunity to be a good football team.”
