Garden Reach Shipbuilders bags contract to build 4 commercial vessels for German company

Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) Ltd said it has signed an agreement with Carsten Rehder Schiffsmäkler & Reederei GmbH & Co. KG Germany for the construction and delivery of four multi-purpose vessels of 7,500 DWT each, with an option to build four more vessels in the near future.

These ships will be 120 meters long and 17 meters wide, and their maximum draft will be 6.75 meters. GRSE, a shipbuilding and repair company under the administrative control of the Ministry of Defense, said that each of these ships can carry 7,500 metric tonnes of cargo.

The ships will have a single cargo hold, each capable of accommodating bulk, general and project cargo. Containers will be carried on hatch covers. The ships will also carry several large windmill blades on deck, the company said.

The company has been exporting warships for the past decade. In 2014, the offshore patrol vessel CGS Barracuda built by GRSE was exported to Mauritius. This was the first warship exported by India.

In 2021, it exported a Fast Patrol Vessel PS Zoroaster to Seychelles. Earlier this year, the ship was brought back to GRSE for refit, which has been completed.

The shipyard is also currently working on six patrol boats and a TSH dredger for the Bangladesh government. In 2023, the company delivered the passenger-cum-cargo sea ferry MV Ma Lisha to the Cooperative Republic of Guyana. The company said it is now the largest and most advanced ferry in that country.
