Why and how does this happen:Gujarati Popular in Canada
Statistics Canada reveals a surge in Gujarati-speaking immigrants, placing Gujarati as the third most-spoken language among Indians in Canada. Since 1980, approximately 87,900 Gujarati speakers have settled in Canada, with 26% arriving between 2016 and 2021. During this period, Punjabi speakers led with 75,475 immigrants, followed by 35,170 Hindi speakers. Gujarati ranked third, with 22,935 immigrants, while Malayalam and Bengali speakers followed.
Why Canada become better option than US?
The appeal of Canada as a destination has grown, especially for Gujaratis, due to its easier permanent residency process and affordable education. “Canada became a preferred option as the U.S. imposed stricter visa policies,” said immigration consultant Sameer Yadav. Between 1991 and 2000, around 13,365 Gujarati speakers migrated to Canada, which more than doubled in the next two decades. However, recent policy shifts, including rising housing costs and stricter PR requirements, have led to an 80% decline in visa applications from Gujarat.
