South African veteran Jonty Rhodes believes the Indian team will be stronger under new head coach Gautam Gambhir. He said the former opener has the ability to make an instant impact in any team. “Gautam Gambhir makes an impact wherever he goes. We saw that when he left Lucknow Super Giants and moved to Kolkata Knight Riders,” Rhodes told PTI video at the Pro Cricket League launch event on Saturday.

“He’s a very practical guy and he’s definitely someone who knows what he wants and speaks for himself.

He said, “Gambhir leaves no stone unturned and now that he has taken charge of the Indian team, the team will become stronger.”

Rhodes, the fielding coach of Lucknow Super Giants, also praised the appointment of Zaheer Khan as the mentor of the IPL team.

He said that Zaheer’s calm nature will help the team to overcome stressful situations during the match.

“At the IPL level you need a cool cricketing mind, especially in the dugout. You need people with cool heads because it is very stressful,” he said.

He said, “If emotions start to overwhelm you, it affects everyone sitting in the dugout or on the field. In such a situation, it is a very good thing to have a player like Zaheer, because he brings passion along with skill and knowledge.”

“We have worked together at Mumbai Indians and he is technically really strong.” There are rumours that Rohit Sharma is set to replace KL Rahul at LSG.

Rhodes said, “I have spent a lot of time with Rohit Sharma at Mumbai Indians and I am very grateful that I got a chance to watch him play there. If there are any changes, it will not be my decision and I am not worried about them right now.”

Rhodes compared young LSG batsman Ayush Badoni to former Proteas batsman Herschelle Gibbs, who broke the record for most sixes (19) by a batsman in an innings of a T20 match in the ongoing Delhi Premier League.

He said, “He is definitely an exceptional talent, he is short so his centre of gravity is low. He gets hold of good length balls and can hit the ball anywhere around the ground, his hands are very quick. Justin Langer is very impressed with his talent.”

“He reminds me a bit of Herschelle Gibbs. He has tremendous hitting ability and when he combines it with calm, presence of mind, a good game plan, he will become a really tough guy to bowl to as he can play both conventional and unconventional shots with ease.”
