New Delhi: Union Home Ministry The state government has asked the state police forces to provide a situation report every two hours in the wake of protests by doctors, nursing staff and others against the alleged rape and murder of a postgraduate trainee doctor at a government hospital. RG Kar Medical College Doctors are being recruited in hospitals and hospitals in Kolkata. In a message sent to the state police forces, the Home Ministry has said that the law and order situation of all states should be monitored in view of the protests.
“Thereafter, please send continuous two hourly reports on law and order situation in this regard by fax/email/Whatsapp to Ministry of Home Affairs Control Room (New Delhi) from 1600 hrs today,” the letter sent on Friday said.
A postgraduate trainee doctor was allegedly raped and murdered while on duty at Kolkata’s RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. A civilian volunteer of the Kolkata Police was arrested in connection with the crime the next day. The Calcutta High Court handed over the case to the CBI on Tuesday.
During a protest being carried out by women against the rape-murder incident, a group of people entered the hospital premises after midnight on Wednesday and vandalised parts of the medical facility.
Doctors and other medical staff in various parts of the country have been staging protests affecting the functioning of healthcare facilities. They are pressing for a central law to prevent violence against healthcare workers, declaring hospitals as safe zones with mandatory security rights, and other demands.
