India to launch e-medical visa facility for Bangladeshi citizens; opens new consulate in Rangpur, ET HealthWorld

New Delhi: India will launch e-medical visa facility for Bangladeshi citizens coming to India for medical treatment, Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Saturday after a meeting between delegations of the two countries in the national capital.

India will also open a new Consulate in Rangpur to provide services to the people of the northwestern region of Bangladesh.

The two Prime Ministers addressed the media after the meeting at Hyderabad House on Saturday.

Prime Minister Modi emphasized that the two leaders have met several times in the last one year. He said that this visit is special because Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is the first state guest of India in the third term of the NDA government.

In the press statement, Prime Minister Modi said, “We have met 10 times in the last one year, but today's meeting is special because Prime Minister Hasina is the first state guest of our third government. Bangladesh is important for our Neighbourhood First Policy, Act East Policy, Vision SAGAR and Indo-Pacific Vision. We have completed many development programmes together last year.”

He further said, “India will launch e-medical visa for Bangladeshi citizens coming to India for medical treatment. India has decided to open a new Assistant High Commission in Rangpur to benefit the people of the northwestern part of Bangladesh.”

PM Modi also wished both the teams ahead of the T20 World Cup Super 8 match between India and Bangladesh today.

He said, “I wish both the cricket teams of India and Bangladesh all the best for today's match.”

PM Modi further said that India and Bangladesh have started trading in Indian Rupees. He also highlighted the export of electricity from Nepal to Bangladesh using the Indian grid.

He said that both the countries have decided to start negotiations at the technical level for renewal of the Ganga River Treaty. A technical team will also visit Bangladesh to review the conservation and management of the Teesta river in Bangladesh.

“The sixth rail link between India and Bangladesh has become operational between Jakhoda and Agartala. Cargo services have been initiated for our northeastern states with the Khulna-Mongla port… Trade in Indian Rupees has begun between the two countries. The world's longest river cruise journey on the Ganga river between India and Bangladesh has been successfully completed,” PM Modi said.

“The first cross-border friendship pipeline between India and Bangladesh has been completed. Export of electricity from Nepal to Bangladesh using the Indian grid has become an example of regional cooperation,” he said.

Prime Minister Modi further said that the two countries have developed a forward-looking vision for cooperation in new areas. He said that agreements on green partnership, digital partnership, blue economy and space will benefit the youth of both countries.

Emphasising on focus on “Connectivity, Commerce, Cooperation”, he said both sides are ready to start negotiations on CEPA to strengthen economic ties between the two countries.

He said that India-Bangladesh Friendship Satellite will take India-Bangladesh relations to new heights.

The Prime Minister said, “The India-Bangladesh Maitri Satellite will take our relations to new heights. Our focus has been on connectivity, commerce and cooperation. In the last 10 years, we have restored the pre-1965 connectivity. Now we will focus more on digital and energy connectivity. This will boost the economies of both countries.”

“Both sides are ready to launch negotiations on CEPA to take our economic ties to new heights… 54 rivers link India and Bangladesh – we have cooperated on flood management, early warning and drinking water projects,” he said.

Both leaders held a bilateral meeting today.
