The first phase of the much-anticipated Jammu and Kashmir Assembly polls has commenced, marking the first assembly elections since the abrogation of Article 370 in August 2019. Voting is taking place across seven districts today, covering 24 Assembly constituencies.

More than 23.27 lakh voters, including 11.76 lakh men and 11.51 lakh women, are eligible to cast their votes in this phase. The polling covers the Chenab Valley districts of Doda, Kishtwar, and Ramban, as well as the South Kashmir districts of Anantnag, Pulwama, Kulgam, and Shopian.
Prominent Candidates and Key Segments
Notable candidates include Mohammad Yousuf Tarigami from CPI (M), seeking a fifth term in Kulgam; AICC General Secretary Ghulam Ahmad Mir, aiming for a third term from Dooru; and Sakina Itoo from the National Conference, running from Damhal Hajipora. Significant attention is also focused on the Srigufwara-Bijbehara and Pulwama assembly segments, where PDP’s Iltija Mufti and Waheed Para are contesting.
Security Measures and Alerts
A general security alert has been issued across the Union Territory, particularly in Jammu and Srinagar. Additional checkpoints have been established for vehicle and pedestrian searches.
