The second edition of the Formula 4 Indian Championship, along with the Indian Racing League, will begin at the Madras International Circuit on Saturday. Both racing series are part of the Indian Racing Festival organised by Racing Promotions Pvt Ltd.
The F4 Indian Championship is an FIA-sanctioned single-seater racing series that awards Super Licence points for the eventual champion.
Although India has had two Formula One drivers and a few others who have reached Formula 2, including Kush Maini, who is currently competing in the FIA Formula 2 Championship, the road to the pinnacle of motorsport remains tough for drivers from the subcontinent.
The F4 Indian Championship aims to bridge this gap by providing Indian racers a way up the motorsport ladder, while also making it more affordable than similar championships held abroad.

Former Indian national karting champion Ruhan Alva and Abhay Mohan, who won the MRF 1600 National Championship on Sunday, are two such racers who will look to make the most of this opportunity when they compete in the 2024 F4 Indian Championship.
Speaking about the F4 Championship, Ruhan said, “It is very important for Indian motorsport. It was extremely competitive last year due to foreign participation and it helped the drivers develop.”
“For all the young and upcoming racers this is a championship you can move into from karting, without having to go to Europe and spend huge amounts of money to move up the ranks,” he said.
“Having the championship in India gives the racers a good preparation year or a good year depending on the grid before going to Europe,” Ruhan explained.
Abhay Mohan, who won his first championship, expressed similar views on the cost aspect, saying, “This is a great opportunity for Indian racers. It is within our budget and saves us a lot of money for travelling to Europe apart from the cost of racing.”
