The Norwegian Nobel Committee has awarded the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize to Nihon Hidankyo, a Japanese organisation representing survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This prestigious recognition was given in honour of the group’s relentless efforts in advocating for a world free of nuclear weapons, and for sharing their powerful testimonies about the horrors of nuclear warfare.

Nihon Hidankyo: Advocating a World Free of Nuclear Weapons Since 1956

Formed in 1956, Nihon Hidankyo is the largest and most influential organisation of atomic bomb survivors in Japan. Its mission has been to raise global awareness of the catastrophic humanitarian consequences of nuclear weapons. By sharing personal accounts from the Hibakusha – survivors of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki bombings – the organisation has contributed significantly to the global movement against the use of nuclear weapons, shaping the “nuclear taboo,” a powerful norm that renders the use of nuclear arms morally unacceptable.
