Shan Masood’s side have dropped to eighth place in the ICC Test rankings following their first-ever series loss to Bangladesh and have reached a historic low of the lowest rating points since 1965. Pakistan lost the first Test by 10 wickets while the hosts lost the second Test by six wickets and both matches were played in Rawalpindi. “Pakistan have dropped two places to eighth in the ICC Men’s Test Team Rankings after their shock home series defeat to Bangladesh,” the ICC said on its website.
The hosts were sixth in the rankings table before the series, but a string of defeats have seen them slip below the West Indies to eighth place with 76 rating points.
“This is Pakistan’s lowest rating points in the Test rankings table since 1965, except for a brief period when they did not feature in the rankings due to an insufficient number of matches.” Bangladesh’s chase of 185 in the second Test was also the third-highest successful chase by any visiting team in Pakistan, but it did little in the way of promotion for the ‘Tigers’.
Bangladesh remained in ninth place, behind Pakistan, despite gaining 13 rating points.
However, the 2-0 series win has strengthened Bangladesh in the points table for the World Test Championship cycle 2023-25 as they are now placed fourth behind table-toppers India, Australia in second and New Zealand in third.
Bangladesh, who will now turn their focus to the two-Test series against India starting in Chennai from September 19, have 45.83 percent marks and 33 points with three wins and as many losses from six Tests.
In the World Test Championship, teams get 12 points for winning a Test, four points for a draw and six points for a tie, and are ranked according to the percentage of points won.
