People across Northeast India woke up in panic this morning as strong tremors from a Myanmar earthquake rattled the region. The 6.0 magnitude quake struck near the India-Myanmar border around 5:30 AM, sending frightened residents running out of their homes in Manipur, Nagaland and Assam.
While no major structural damage has been reported yet, the Myanmar earthquake did cause minor cracks in some older buildings. Local authorities have deployed teams to inspect bridges and critical infrastructure.
“We’re taking all precautions,” said Assam Disaster Management official Priya Das. “Our emergency response units are fully alert.”
The region’s history of seismic activity has experts particularly concerned. Dr. Anil Kumar from the National Geophysical Research Institute warned: “This Myanmar earthquake should serve as a wake-up call. Many buildings in the northeast aren’t quake-proof.”
His team recorded at least three aftershocks in the hours following the main tremor.
As schools and businesses reopened cautiously, social media buzzed with eyewitness accounts. A viral video from Dimapur shows streetlights swaying dramatically during the quake.
Meanwhile, officials continue monitoring the situation closely, aware that another strong Myanmar earthquake could strike without warning.
