Punjab Government PIA: Denies Plans to Buy PIA
Punjab Information Minister Azma Bokhari has firmly denied rumors suggesting that the provincial government is planning to acquire Pakistan International Airlines (PIA). Speaking to the media in Lahore on Monday, Bokhari stated that the government has “no intentions” of joining the bidding process for the national carrier.
Nawaz Sharif’s Consultations on PIA
Former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif previously mentioned that Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz had sought his advice on whether the government should purchase PIA or establish a new airline. However, Bokhari clarified that this was merely a discussion among party members and did not represent a formal intention by the provincial government.
Privatisation Plans for PIA
Privatisation Minister Abdul Aleem Khan had earlier hinted at plans to sell PIA to a private buyer without liabilities, with the aim of clearing the airline’s Rs200 billion debt and sparking interest from potential investors.
Clarifying Nawaz’s Remarks
Bokhari explained that Nawaz Sharif’s comments were made during a discussion with party business leaders facing travel issues, citing the lack of direct flights and the deteriorating condition of PIA. She emphasized that the provincial government is not involved in the PIA acquisition.
