World Cup-winning skipper Rohit Sharma said his team's victory is a “dream come true” for India as he looks forward to a hero's welcome on his return home. The T20 triumph ends more than a decade of heartbreak since India last won the World Cup in the 50-over version in 2011. “The team and I are so proud to be able to bring the cup home and truly overwhelmed by how much joy it has brought to everyone,” Rohit said in a post on social media on Monday.

He also posted a photo of himself lying on his back with his eyes closed and wearing his blue team kit.

“This picture represents how I am feeling at the moment,” he said.

“Right now I am enjoying a dream come true for a billion people.”

India won a global tournament for the first time since the 2013 Champions Trophy after triumphing by seven runs in a thrilling final in Barbados on Saturday.

It is unclear when the Indian team will return home after Indian media reported on Monday that they were stuck in Barbados after being delayed by Hurricane Beryl.

Board of Control for Cricket in India secretary Jay Shah announced that around 25 people from the team, coaching and support staff will be given prize money worth around $15 million as a reward for their “talent, determination and sportsmanship”.

The bonus is in addition to the record prize money of $11.25 million set for the tournament, of which India will get $2.45 million.

India's win led to midnight celebrations across the cricket-loving nation with fans wearing blue Indian jerseys taking to the streets in various cities, including capital New Delhi.
