RWITC and BMC sign 30-year lease for Mahalaxmi Racecourse

The Royal Western India Turf Club (RWITC) and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) have officially signed an agreement regarding the lease of the Mahalaxmi Racecourse, according to a letter issued by RWITC chairman Surendra R. Sanas.

A new lease from 1 June 2023 to 31 May 2053 was granted based on the mandate given by the members at the extraordinary meeting held on 30 January 2024.

Earlier this year, a proposal was put forward by the state government and the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), led by then BMC commissioner Iqbal Singh Chahal, which resulted in RWITC members voting in favour of the agreement with a 76% majority on January 30.

Under the final deal, a major portion of the racecourse, 120 acres out of 211 acres, will be converted into a theme park. RWITC will retain the remaining 91 acres for horse racing and turf club activities.
