India captain Rohit Sharma lauded his team for their comfortable 47-run win over Afghanistan on Thursday, attributing the brilliant all-round performance to better planning which was made possible due to extensive knowledge about the local conditions. India put up a brilliant performance, scoring 181 for 8 and then bowling out Afghanistan for 134 to register a comfortable 47-run win. “For the last two years we have been playing T20s here, so we understand the conditions and plan accordingly. We adapted well and scored 180, which was a brilliant effort from the batsmen. We had excellent bowlers who defended it well,” Rohit said during the post-match presentation.

“Everyone came and did their job, that's important and we focus on that. The partnership between SRH and Hardik was crucial at that stage, we needed someone who can bat deep, which he did. Jasprit Bumrah was brilliant and returned impressive figures of 4-1-7-3.

Rohit said, “We know Bumrah's class and what he can do. It is important for us to use him wisely regardless of the circumstances. He is ready to take responsibility and he has been doing it for years.”

India fielded three spinners against Afghanistan but Rohit said they could revert to a pace attack in the upcoming T20 World Cup matches depending on the pitch and the opposition.

India had fielded three pacers and two spinners in the group stage but Kuldeep Yadav was included in the playing XI for their opening Super 8 match against Afghanistan on Thursday, making it a three-pronged spin attack.

Asked if India would go with a three-spinner combination from now on, Rohit insisted that they want to maintain flexibility as far as the combination is concerned.

“We have to assess the conditions and the opposition and based on that we are ready to make changes if needed. It felt that three spinners were good here, if the situation favours fast bowlers next time then we will go with fast bowlers.” Losing captain Rashid Khan said that his team should start chasing such scores successfully against top teams.

“It was a surface where we thought we could chase 170-180. You just go out there and play how you want to. Against the bigger teams, we should think we have to chase such scores,” he added.

Rashid was the best bowler for Afghanistan as he took three wickets for 26 runs, his best international performance since returning from surgery.

He said, “The body is feeling good. I had to struggle a bit in the IPL. Now I am consistently batting in the right areas. Wherever we played, we enjoyed it. We sometimes forget our skills. If the conditions are favorable, we will try to take advantage of it.”

Suryakumar Yadav, who was named Player of the Match for scoring 53 off 28 balls, attributed his success to practice and clarity of mind.

“I think it's a lot of hard work, it's a lot of process and routine. I have it clear in my mind what I want to do,” he said.

“I think you just need to know your game plan and play accordingly. I still remember when Hardik came in to bat, I told him let's bat with this intent. Let's keep pressing the pedal and keep going, very happy to score 180 in the end.” PTI ATK KHS
