Unrest in Bangladesh affects engineering shipments to the country

India’s engineering goods exports to Bangladesh fell 9% in the first four months of the year as recent unrest in the country disrupted supply chains, raising fears of revenue losses and uncertainty for an industry that accounts for a quarter of India’s merchandise exports.

Total exports of engineering goods rose 4.2% to nearly $37 billion between April and July, slightly higher than overall exports, but data from industry body EEPC India showed a sharp 31.6% fall in iron and steel exports hurt growth.

Moreover, 13 of the top 25 export markets in the region have shown less interest for Indian goods so far in 2024-25, including large buyers such as Italy (-26.4%), Korea (-16.6%), Nepal (-12.3%) and Bangladesh. This is offset by a nearly 44% increase in exports to the UAE and a 33% rise in shipments to Saudi Arabia, which has imported engineering goods worth $4.4 billion so far this year, second only to exports of $6.1 billion to the USA, reflecting a 7.2% increase compared to the same period in 2023-24.

Regarding the decline in exports to Bangladesh, EEPC said that violence and protests in the country have significantly hampered the imports, causing huge losses to exporters across the world, including India.
