Skipper Ayush Badoni and Priyansh Arya smashed brilliant half-centuries as South Delhi Superstars defeated Old Delhi 6 by three wickets in the opening match of the inaugural edition of the Delhi Premier League T20.
With the help of Arpit Rana’s 59 runs off 41 balls and Vansh Bedi’s 47 runs off 19 balls, Old Delhi 6 scored 197 runs for 3 wickets in 20 overs, in response to which South Delhi Superstars achieved the target in 19.1 overs.
Chasing a target of 198 runs, South Delhi Superstars got off to a quick start. Openers Priyansh Arya and Sarthak Ray batted brilliantly to score 73 runs in the powerplay.
Ray, who scored 41 runs off 26 balls, was caught and bowled by Shivam Sharma in the seventh over, while Arya completed his half-century off 27 balls in the 12th over. In the same over, captain Ayush Badoni, who had started his innings cautiously, hit four consecutive sixes off Ankit Bhadana, taking the team’s score to 140/1.
Arya was caught by Arpit Rana off Sharma in the next over after scoring 57 off 30 balls with the help of three fours and four sixes. Dhruv Singh (1 off 2 balls) then fell cheaply to Prince Yadav while Badoni reached his half-century off 25 balls in the 14th over, leaving 38 runs needed from 36 balls to win.
However, Old Delhi 6 lost four wickets in quick succession and the match changed dramatically. Badoni (57 off 29 balls) and Tejaswi (0 off 1 ball) were dismissed in the 15th over, Kunwar Bidhuri (5 off 7 balls) in the 17th over and Sumit Mathur (9 off 10 balls) in the 18th over, leaving South Delhi needing 13 runs from the last two overs.
Vision Panchal and Digvesh Rathi then showed some resilience and reached the target with five balls to spare.
Earlier, Old Delhi 6 were invited to bat first and suffered an early setback when Manjeet (13 off 8 balls) was dismissed in the third over. Divij Mehra gave South Delhi Superstars the breakthrough when Kunwar Bidhuri took a sharp diving catch near short third man. Despite the early setback, Arpit Rana and star wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant held the innings together and took Old Delhi 6 to 58/1 by the end of the powerplay.
Rana batted fluently and completed his half-century off 37 balls in the 11th over while Pant played a supporting role. The duo completed the team’s 100 runs in the 13th over. However, Rana (59 off 41 balls) was dismissed in the same over by Badoni. Soon after, Pant too was dismissed by Kunwar Bidhuri in the 15th over for 35 off 32 balls.
Old Delhi 6 were 129/3 after 15 overs, Vansh Bedi and Lalit Yadav increased the pace by hitting boundaries in the death overs and added 79 runs in 34 balls. Bedi’s 47* off 19 balls and Yadav’s 34* off 21 balls helped Old Delhi 6 post an impressive 197/3 in their allotted 20 overs.
