The Indian cricket team won the T20 World Cup 2024 by defeating South Africa in the final, for which Virat Kohli won the Player of the Match award. His 59-ball 76 helped India post a score of 176, which the Proteas fell short of chasing by 7 runs. Despite Kohli's innings playing a key role in India's win in the final, some believe he shouldn't have been given the Player of the Match award. In fact, former India opener Wasim Jaffer feels Kohli wasn't even the team's most important batsman in the final.

For Jaffer, who himself was an opener for India, Axar Patel is number one in the list of batsmen whose contribution helped the team win the match in the final against South Africa.

Jaffer said, “Virat Kohli did not score many runs in the tournament, but he chose the right time to perform well. As we say, the time has come, the player has arrived, his innings of 76 runs made a lot of difference and held one end.” Youtube channel,

He said, “I think the most important role was played by Axar Patel. The small role he played ensured that India's run rate never went below eight runs per over. He attacked the South African bowlers and did not let them settle, and made important partnerships with Kohli.”

Jaffer ended the video by praising two of India's icon players – Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma – and admitted that their absence will leave a huge gap in the team.

“Two legends of the game (Rohit and Kohli) have retired from T20Is and that will certainly make a big difference. However, they made the right decision to go out happily after winning the trophy and we must bow down to the true greats of the game. We will continue to see them in the IPL, ODIs and Tests,” Jaffer said.
