The squad for the Zimbabwe series is expected to be announced by the end of this week, on June 22 or 23.Currently, young IPL performers, including Indian team players, BCCIThe players included in the 'target list' are attending the camp under the guidance of Laxman at the NCA.
Gambhir has emerged as the frontrunner for the senior men's team head coach's post, beating former women's team head coach WV Raman. The announcement is being considered a formality and is expected in the coming days.
As head coach, Gambhir will have the opportunity to select his support staff, which will include batting, bowling and fielding coaches.
It is being speculated that Gambhir will begin his role in mid-July when Team India leaves for a limited-overs series in Sri Lanka, consisting of three T20Is and as many ODIs.
“It is likely that Laxman and some of the NCA coaches will travel to Zimbabwe with the new team. Whenever Rahul Dravid and the team coaches have taken breaks from time to time during their tenure, Laxman and the NCA team have always been full,” a BCCI source told PTI on condition of anonymity.
The BCCI is set to send a relatively less experienced squad to Zimbabwe for the upcoming series, with only a few players from the T20 World Cup squad expected to feature.
The remaining spots will be filled by promising young talents, giving them an opportunity to showcase their skills on the international stage.
Among the new players, Riyan Parag, Abhishek Sharma and all-rounder Nitish Reddy are almost certain to be selected. Apart from this, Yash Dayal or Harshit Rana may get their first international call-up, which will add depth to the bowling department.
The responsibility of captaincy for the Zimbabwe tour will probably be given to Hardik Pandya or Rohit Sharma. Suryakumar Yadav,
Pandya's selection will depend on whether he asks for a break or not, while Surya has already gained leadership experience by captaining the domestic T20 team against Australia and during the series in South Africa.
