Indian T20I batsman Suryakumar Yadav has expressed his desire to “earn a spot” in the Indian Test team, saying that red-ball cricket is a priority for him. India are scheduled to play 10 Tests in the next few months. However, despite being a regular in India’s white-ball setup, Suryakumar has played only one Test – against Australia in February 2023, scoring eight runs in his only Test innings. In the same year, he was named as one of the reserves in the ICC World Test Championship Final squad.

With Shreyas Iyer, Sarfaraz Khan, KL Rahul and Rajat Patidar also fighting for a spot, Suryakumar admitted he has a tough challenge ahead of him.

“There are many people who have worked hard to make their place and I also want to regain that place,” Suryakumar said, according to ICC.

He said, “I made my debut for India in Test matches. After this I also got injured. There are many players who got the chance and they also performed well. They deserve this opportunity at this time.”

33-year-old Suryakumar will return to play red ball cricket for his domestic team Mumbai in India’s domestic tournament Duleep Trophy. Suryakumar Buchi Babu will also play in the tournament.
Looking at the upcoming match, Suryakumar’s focus is on making a positive impact.

The batsman said, “If I have to play in the future, I will play automatically. It is not in my control. Right now all I can do is play the Buchi Babu tournament, after that play the Duleep Trophy and then see what happens.”

He said, “But yes, I am really looking forward to it. There are ten Test matches to go and I am excited to play with the red ball.”

In 82 first-class matches, he has scored 5,628 runs at an average of 43.62, including 14 centuries.

In an effort to break into the Test team, he stressed that the longest format has always been his priority.

Suryakumar said, “Red-ball cricket has always been my priority. When I grew up in the grounds of Mumbai and played local cricket, I started playing with the red ball. The love for the longest format started from there and has always been there.”

He said, “I have played many first-class matches over the last ten years and I still enjoy playing this format.”
