Vice President, Paralympic Committee of India(PCI) Satya Prakash Sangwan was chosen as the head of the Indian team For Paris Paralympics 2024, he said, “This time the target is to win at least 25-30 medals including eight to ten gold medals. After the sports mega event of Paris Olympics, the sporting activities will continue with Paris Paralympics from August 28.”
The PCI on Tuesday (August 20, 2024) announced the appointment of Satya Prakash as the Chef de Mission of the Indian Paralympic team for the competition. He brings over a decade of dedicated service and experience to the Paralympic movement.
Speaking to ANI, Mr Satya Prakash said, “This day is historic for me. I have been selected as the Chef-de-Mission for the Indian contingent at the Paris Paralympics. I will carry out this duty with great responsibility. I am grateful to the PCI and the Central Government for considering me worthy for this job.”
Looking at the progress made by India in the Paralympics over the years, including four medals in 2016 and 19 medals at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics, Mr Satya Prakash said, “We expect at least 25-30 medals this time. We expect at least eight to ten gold medals. It will be a matter of pride for us. The athletes have prepared really well. Whatever they needed was provided to them. We hope they will make our country proud on the global stage. We sent our athletes out for their training, organised camps across the country. The preparation has been good.”
He credited PCI Chief Coach Satyanarayana for providing the best equipment, facilities and preparation to the players. As Chef-de-Mission, Mr Sangwan will lead India’s largest ever contingent of 84 para-athletes competing in 12 sporting disciplines. His role will be crucial in ensuring that the Indian team gets the necessary support and guidance to excel on the global stage.
The position of Chef-de-Mission is a multi-faceted role that requires leadership, guidance and strategic planning. Mr Sangwan will be responsible for overseeing the seamless operation of the national delegation, fostering a positive and supportive environment, and motivating athletes to perform at their best.
At the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics, India won five gold medals, eight silver and six bronze medals, finishing with a record total of 19 medals.
