R. Ashwin explains one of the main reasons for writing his book, “We all come to this planet for a very short time, and if we can touch people’s lives in any way and make them laugh or learn something from their story, that’s great.” I have roads: The story of a kutty cricketWhich was inaugurated here on Friday.

He said, “Smart people learn from the experiences of others. As long as this book has a positive impact on even five percent of the people who read it, I've done my job.”

Ashwin, who will play in the TNPL next month, said he wanted to spread the word about what it takes to succeed at the highest level. “We need to understand that if you come from this part of the country, you have to fight for acceptance. You can't give up. That's one thing I wanted to instill. We often want it to be easy and we don't expect it to be difficult. If you're interested in it, you have to adapt to it. If you want to succeed, be prepared for the fact that things will be difficult. That's what I wanted to reiterate,” Ashwin explained.

Explaining the reason behind the title of the book, Ashwin spoke about how urban and street cricket were safe spaces for him even as he became an integral part of the Indian team.

“In my 17-18 years as a professional cricketer, I would be lying if I said I felt comfortable with a large part of it. I always wanted to be back home to my friends and family by 2015. You have to accept that this is the way it is and learn how to deal with it, but you can't run away and complain. So the book was about me returning to the streets, which was a perfect fit for the whole story.”

Later in the evening, in a conversation with sports commentator Radhakrishnan Srinivasan, Ashwin spoke about the way his parents and grandfather worked and the curiosity that drove him. The off-spinner also spoke about the important roles played by former cricketers MS Dhoni, Gautam Gambhir and WV Raman.
