50 Senior Doctors Resign in Solidarity with Protesting Juniors at RG Kar Hospital
In a dramatic display of solidarity, 50 senior doctors resign at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata to support the junior doctors’ ongoing hunger strike. The protest, now in its fifth day, is a call for justice, transparency, and the implementation of patient-friendly systems amid an alleged corruption and threat syndicate at the facility.
Junior Doctors’ Hunger Strike for Campus Democracy
The junior doctors have been on a hunger strike since Saturday, seeking not only justice for a colleague but also pushing for broader reforms. Their demands include a centralised referral system for hospitals across the state, a bed vacancy monitoring system, and task forces to ensure adequate provisions like CCTV coverage, on-call rooms, and washroom facilities. Additionally, they are urging for more police protection, particularly the recruitment of permanent women police personnel.
Call for Action and Response
Despite the hunger strike and protests, the striking doctors claim there has been no response from the authorities. In a further escalation, 15 senior doctors also joined their junior colleagues in a symbolic hunger strike earlier today.
