Alcon International, a global leader in eye care, in association with Aravind Eye Care System has announced the launch of ‘India’s first Global Centre of Excellence for Cataract Surgery Training’ in Chennai.
“This is the first dedicated centre to provide comprehensive training in advanced cataract surgery procedures for ophthalmologists,” Rajkumar Narayanan, chairman, Alcon International, told The Hindu.
As per the plan, the COE will be located inside the Aravind Eye Hospital Poonamallee campus. In the first year, it plans to train around 180 residents and practicing doctors in advanced procedures like phacoemulsification (phaco).
“We will be supplying high-end equipment to Alcon Arvind Centre for Surgical Advancement, while Arvind Eye Care will take care of the training part. The certified courses are expected to start by the fourth quarter of this year,” he added.
He added, “Most ophthalmology residency programs in India focus on basic cataract surgery and few offer phaco training. The COE aims to address this gap by providing surgical residents with greater exposure to high-quality equipment and training.”
The CoE aims to tie up with medical colleges across the country and provide training in advanced phaco surgery to ophthalmologists. It will also serve as a centre for phaco training for doctors in Africa, an Alcon official said.
Going forward, Alcon is considering setting up COEs in South Africa and Latin American countries.
