Anuj Rawat and Sujal Singh entered the record books with the second-highest opening partnership in T20 of 241 runs in the Delhi Premier League match between East Delhi and Old Delhi 6.

Rawat and Sujal, who have played for Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL, thrashed the opposition bowlers by scoring their respective centuries.

Japan’s Lachlan Yamamoto-Lake (134) and Kendall Kadowaki-Fleming (109) hold the record for the highest T20 partnership for the first wicket, making 258/0 in 20 overs against China in February this year.

Anuj scored 121 runs in just 66 balls with the help of 11 sixes and six fours, while Sujal scored 108 runs in 57 balls with the help of nine sixes and seven fours.

Chasing a target of 242, Old Delhi fell short by 26 runs and were able to score only 215/8 in 20 overs.

“We are really happy because initially we didn’t think both of us would score hundreds but as the game progressed and shots started coming, it became possible,” Anuj told the media at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Thursday.

Sujal said communication was key in creating the huge opening stand.

“I wouldn’t say our approach was deliberate, it was just about going with the flow of the game,” he said.

“We felt comfortable by communicating with each other which was very simple as I was capitalising on the opportunity to hit boundaries and when I was struggling, Anuj was taking the initiative, so this communication worked wonders for us,” he added.

Sujal also praises Anuj for helping them.

He said, “I get to learn a lot because Anuj is very friendly with us youngsters. We get a lot of confidence after talking to him and he shares his experience which is very valuable for us.”

“I am batting with Anuj for the first time in this tournament and I am grateful to be batting with him as he has played a big role for me because when a youngster performs well then the role of a senior player becomes important there.” Despite his brilliant century, Sujal does not have the IPL auction on his mind.

He said, “My plan is to play the same innings that I have played. My job starts with batting on the wicket and ends there. Apart from this, I am not thinking much about it (IPL auction).”

Rawat has come to the forefront of the current RCB squad after the retirement of Dinesh Karthik but he is not thinking too far ahead as the IPL is set to witness a big auction.

He said, “Only performance is in our hand, it is up to the franchise to buy or retain a player in the auction. But if we focus more on our job of scoring runs then everything else will happen automatically.”
