Arne Slot enjoys victory as Liverpool boss at Anfield Luis Diaz And Mohamed Salah scoring in a 2-0 win over Brentford on Sunday. The Reds join Manchester City, Arsenal and Brighton as the only teams to take maximum points from two games of the new Premier League season. Slot faces tough tests in his challenging task of replacing Jurgen Klopp, starting with the visit of Manchester United next weekend. But the early signs are positive for the Dutchman as his side are yet to concede a goal and have plenty of attacking options led by Salah.
“Most of the players are used to our expectations because it’s not that different from what Jurgen has done in the past,” Slott said after the opening weekend’s win at Ipswich.
“We still have a lot to prove against teams that can finish in the top six.”
Slott is expected to adopt a more possession-centric approach than the one adopted by Klopp during his tenure.
However, Liverpool’s opener was a copy of Klopp’s goal.
From a Brentford corner, Salah releases the ball Diogo JotaWho passed to Diaz at the perfect time and moved towards goal and placed the ball into the top corner in the 13th minute.
After this, in the first half, only glimpses of the football were seen which Slot was hoping to bring.
Brentford were missing again Ivan ToneyWho is expected to leave the club before Friday’s transfer deadline.
But even without the England striker the Bees still posed a threat and should have equalised 10 minutes into the second half.
Nathan Collins meets Mathias Jensen’s lovely cross with a bullet header. Alison Baker performed brilliantly.
The warning woke Liverpool up early in the second period.
Collins made a goal-saving block moments later to prevent Jota from scoring Trent Alexander-Arnold‘Low cross.
Vitaly Janelt was the next man to make the crucial move to stop Salah from foiling his team’s clever move.
Brentford goalkeeper Mark Flekken then made a brilliant save to keep out Diaz’s powerful effort.
As is often the case, the Reds had to resort to Salah to eventually secure the points.
The impressive Diaz picked up the assist this time and the Egyptian made a well-timed run, staying onside and dinking the ball over Flekken.
“In the first half the other team has more energy, then in the second half it creates gaps,” Slott said.
“In the end Brentford didn’t have the legs left to defend us.”
At the finale, the 60,000-strong crowd sang for Slot and chanted his name – just as Klopp had instructed them to do at his farewell ceremony in May.
Liverpool looked set to give Klopp a glorious farewell last season as they competed with City and Arsenal for the title, but fell behind in the final weeks of the season.
There is considerable concern among Liverpool supporters that not a single new player has been signed to strengthen the squad in the final week of the transfer window.
But if there is a three-way contest for the title they look best placed to push City and Arsenal back into contention.
