A BoB depression over the west-central and southwest Bay of Bengal has resulted in heavy rainfall across Chennai and parts of Tamil Nadu. Moving west-northwestward at 14 km/h, the system crossed the coast between Puducherry and Nellore on the night of October 16, just north of Chennai. By midnight, it weakened into a well-marked low-pressure area over south-coastal Andhra Pradesh and north-coastal Tamil Nadu.

 

Impact of BoB Depression in South India

The BoB depression is expected to continue weakening over the next 12 hours. Heavy rains are forecasted for regions across South India:

 

South Andhra Pradesh and Rayalaseema: Expect light to moderate rainfall with isolated heavy showers on October 17.

Kerala and South Interior Karnataka: Light to moderate rain with isolated heavy showers over Kerala on October 17 and in south interior Karnataka from October 17-18.

  • Tamil Nadu and Puducherry: Light to moderate rain in many areas, with isolated heavy showers likely on October 17-18.

IMD Issues Warnings Due to BoB Depression

The BoB depression has triggered squally weather, with wind speeds of 25-35 km/h, gusting up to 45 km/h, expected along the Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, and south Andhra Pradesh coasts. Moderate to rough sea conditions are likely in the west-central Bay of Bengal and along these coastal regions
