S. Rithik Eshwaran (83 batting, 115 balls, 6 fours, 2 sixes) and M. Mohammed (41 batting, 73 balls, 5 fours) shared an unbeaten 91-run stand for the seventh wicket as TNCA President’s XI posted 291 for six after a middle-order wobble against Hyderabad on the second day of the Buchi Babu semi-final in Tirunelveli on Tuesday (September 3, 2024).

Left-arm spinner Tanay Thyagarajan took four for 78 to give Hyderabad the lead, followed by good performances from Hrithik and Mohammed.

Earlier, openers S. Radhakrishnan and R. Vimal Khumar (75, 174b, 6×4, 1×6) gave the team a solid start. Tanay removed Radhakrishnan in the 19th over, who pulled to the wicketkeeper for 46.

Vimal and KTA Madhav Prasad (40, 89 balls, 6 fours) showed composure against the Hyderabad pacers; the spinners too tackled them with confidence and took their side to 121 for no loss at lunch.

In the second session, C.V. Milind played a key role in turning the match in the visitors’ favour. The left-arm pacer broke the 94-run second wicket partnership by dismissing Madhav Prasad in the 49th over. Tanay then sent back Vimal in the 56th over with a delivery that pitched on the rough, the sweep shot landing in the wicketkeeper’s gloves.

Between the 56th and 66th overs, President’s XI, which was in a strong position at 160/3, collapsed to 200/6. The left-arm spinner dismissed Andre Siddharth and A. Badrinath cheaply. Another left-arm spinner, Aniket Reddy, had S. Mohammed Ali stumped off a well-flighted delivery.

Day three is going to be very interesting as the President’s XI will try to make up for the deficit of 22 runs and put pressure on Hyderabad.

Score: Hyderabad 313 vs TNCA President’s XI 291/6 in 90 overs (Vimal Khumar 75, KTA Madhav Prasad 40, S. Rithik Eshwaran 83 batting, M. Mohammed 41 batting, Tanay Thyagarajan 4/78).
