Centre Approves Chennai Metro Phase 2,Signals Political Alignment
The Union Cabinet has finally approved Phase 2 of the Chennai Metro Rail project, giving the green light for the Central government’s ₹7,425 crore contribution to the ₹63,246 crore project. This move follows a meeting between Tamil Nadu CM M K Stalin and PM Modi on September 27, reflecting a significant step towards political cooperation.
Project Details and Delayed Approval
The 118.9-km project with 128 stations had been delayed for nearly three years, despite the foundation stone being laid by Amit Shah in November 2020 and funding announced in the 2021-22 budget. The clearance from the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs had been pending, putting financial pressure on the state to proceed without Central support. This approval now aligns the project as a joint sector initiative.
Political ImplicationsThe Centre’s decision is being viewed as a strategic political signal to NDA allies and the DMK, showcasing cooperation in major infrastructure initiatives.
