The tragic death of 26-year-old Ernst & Young (EY) consultant Anna Sebastian, allegedly due to “work stress,” has sparked discussions on toxic corporate work culture in India. Joining the conversation, former Deloitte employee Jayesh Jain shared his own experiences of overwork and its detrimental effects on his health and professional life.

The Reality of Corporate Work Culture

Jayesh Jain, from Indore, took to X to post screenshots of early morning conversations with his colleagues, highlighting the intense pressure in corporate settings. “With the EY case getting attention, I want to share my experience at Deloitte,” Jain wrote. He recalled how the overwhelming workload had a severe impact on both his mental and physical well-being.

Grueling Work Hours and Health Struggles

The screenshots revealed that employees were often working as early as 5 AM, enduring 20-hour shifts while only being allowed to log a maximum of 15 hours. In one message from 5:12 AM, Jain’s colleague expressed frustration, saying, “I was also sitting here with a lot all the time for FI-HI doubts.” Another message at 5:07 AM showed a colleague saying, “I will definitely file a complaint.”

These discussions also captured the employees’ deteriorating health due to overwork. One message read, “Mere se nahi hora bilkul: Chakkar aare hai” (I am not able to do it at all: I feel dizzy), reflecting the physical toll of long hours and stress.

A Call for Change

In his post, Jayesh Jain emphasized the harsh reality of corporate work culture, reminding others that employees are often seen as just numbers. “Always remember, you are just an employee number for them. But for your family, you are everything,” he concluded, expressing relief that he left the toxic environment in time.
