Filmmaker Ranjith, who has been accused by a female actress of outraging her modesty, has filed an anticipatory bail plea in the Kerala High Court, saying he has been falsely implicated in the case and that the complaint could be a result of the actor’s disappointment and displeasure over not being selected to act in the film.
He further said that the actor’s displeasure might have been rekindled by certain interest groups who wanted him to be removed from the post of chairman of the Kerala Chalachitra Academy.
The Ernakulam Town North police had registered a case against Mr Ranjith following the woman actor’s complaint that he inappropriately held her hand and also tried to touch other parts of her body with ‘sexual intent’. The actor had said that Mr Ranjith had called her to his flat in 2009 to discuss a film. Mr Ranjith argued that he was innocent of the allegations levelled against him and that he has been falsely implicated in the case with malicious intent and harassing intentions. He also pointed out that the actor did not choose to lodge a complaint 15 years ago after the alleged offence.
Mr. Ranjith said she has some serious ailments and needs proper medical care and attention, adding that when the actress was present, associate film directors Shankar Ramakrishnan and Girish Damodaran, film producer Subair and office assistant Biju were present in the apartment. It was Mr. Shankar Ramakrishnan who discussed the project with the actress. He argued that the apparent silence about their presence in the complaint reveals the malice involved.
There was no need for custodial interrogation as the alleged incident took place several years ago. Moreover, the alleged offence was bailable in 2009, Mr Ranjit said in his bail plea.
He also said that he would cooperate in the investigation and follow the conditions set by the court.
