Bayern Munich and England striker Harry Kane received the Golden Shoe award as the highest goalscorer in the European football leagues at a ceremony in the Bavarian capital on Tuesday (August 27, 2024).
Kane scored 36 goals during the last Bundesliga season, more than any other player in Europe.
Despite being the Premier League’s top scorer three times, Kane has never won the award.
“It’s a great feeling,” Kane said.
“The award is for everyone. Without you, I wouldn’t be standing here today.
“I am feeling good and looking forward to the new season. I feel a new energy.
“I am very proud to receive this award,” Kane said.
The award was the latest in a long list of individual accolades won by the striker, but Kane is yet to win a team title in his career.
Kane went trophyless in his first year in Munich, marking the first time since 2012 that Bayern finished a season without a trophy.
“I want to continue like last season, but winning the title is also important. We want to achieve success as a team,” he told reporters.
Kane has scored 36 goals in 32 games for Bayern, just five behind former Bayern striker Robert Lewandowski’s single-season record of 41 goals.
The forward said Lewandowski’s record is not worth considering yet.
“Once April comes around and we get a bit closer then maybe we can talk about it, but right now we’re just taking it game by game, trying to score goals and help the team.
“But even if we’re winning and I’m not scoring goals I won’t be worried.”
This season’s Champions League final will be held in Munich and Kane told reporters “we have to be there”.
The England captain was presented with the award by Bayern chief executive Jan-Christian Dresen, who praised Kane’s character since arriving in Munich a season ago.
The Golden Shoe, introduced in the 1967–68 season, was previously awarded to the top scorer in any European league, but this was changed in 1997 to use a ranking system which gives preference to players from higher-ranked leagues.
With six wins, Lionel Messi has won the award more times than anyone else. Messi, Cristiano Ronaldo and Erling Haaland have won the award previously.
“It’s something special that I’m now being mentioned in the same breath with these names,” Kane said.
